OMEGA 3

 A Unisex Dietary Supplement

American diets are deficient in omega-3 essential fatty acids. The American Heart Association recommends 2-6 servings of fish per week which can be difficult to attain. Furthermore, concerns about mercury in fish have created skepticism about fish oil supplements. The Women's Wellness Place has an Omega 3 supplement which we purchased from Wellness Professionals (www.WellnessProfessionals.com)

During pregnancy, we know that omega-3 actually plays a large role in the development and growth of your baby and your health and well-being.

Omega-3 helps to:

  • Build the brain
  • Form the retinas
  • Develop the nervous system
  • Prevent low birth weight babies and premature births
  • Reduce lipids and hyperglycemia, especially in diabetic pregnancies
  • Reduce your chances of developing preeclampsia
  • Reduce your risk for postpartum depression
  • Minimize the chance of preterm labor

Studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids may be helpful in treating a variety of conditions. The evidence is strongest for heart disease and problems that contribute to heart disease, but the range of possible uses for omega-3 fatty acids include:

Arthritis
Omega-3 fatty acid supplements reduce tenderness in joints, decrease morning stiffness, and allow for a reduction in the amount of medication needed for people with rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoporosis
Studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA help increase levels of calcium in the body, deposit calcium in the bones, and improve bone strength.

Asthma
Preliminary research suggests that omega-3 fatty acid supplements may decrease inflammation and improve lung function in adults with asthma.

Menstrual Pain
In a study of nearly 200 Danish women, those with the highest dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids had the mildest symptoms during menstruation.

Although further research is needed, preliminary evidence suggests that omega-3 fatty acids may also prove helpful with stroke, diabetes, weight loss, osteoporosis, depression, schizophrenia, eating disorders, macular degeneration, colon cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer.
