Interferons are naturally occurring proteins with antiviral, antiproliferative, and immune-enhancing properties.

Alferon is indicated for the intralesional treatment of refractory or recurrent external condylomata acuminate, genital warts, in patients 18 years of age or older.

It is available in an injectable solution containing 5 million IU Alferon N per vial for intralesional injection. Each ml contains 5 million units.  It is injected into the base of a wart with a Tuberculin syringe and a 30 gauge needle. A maximum of 0.5 ml (250,000 IU) is injected per session. The minimum effective dose needed is not yet established.  Most lesions will disappear after several weeks of treatments, up to 2 sessions per week, for a maximum of 8 weeks if needed.

Adverse reactions are primarily "flu-like" symptoms including fever, myalgias -muscle pain, and/or headache, relieved by acetaminophen, and decreasing in severity with repeated applications.
