REACTIVE HYPOGLYCEMIA

This diet is designed to prevent symptoms of low blood sugar that occur 1 to 4 hours after food ingestion in persons sensitive to carbohydrates.

This diet is used following low blood sugar as documented during a 5-hour glucose tolerance test. Low blood sugar should be accompanied by symptoms such as sweating, shaking, rapid heart beat, light-headedness, confusion, or mental slowness to be labeled reactive hypoglycemia. Symptoms of reactive hypoglycemia are produced by a compensatory increase in epinephrine secretion as the body attempts to raise blood glucose.

Current recommendations are:

  1. To provide adequate calories based on individual needs.
  2. To modify, decrease, or eliminate the intake of those carbohydrate-rich foods that produce a rapid rise in blood glucose.
  3. Limiting carbohydrates, particularly simple and refined sugars, replacing them with complex carbohydrates. Protein and fat, because of their ability to slow gastric emptying and produce less stimulation for insulin secretion are usually recommended in combination with carbohydrate-rich foods.
  4. Liquids of high sugar content should be avoided because of rapid absorption and blood glucose rise.
  5. Some individuals may benefit from 6 small meals rather than 3 meals daily. Dividing carbohydrates among 5-6 meals provides a source of glucose at or near the time when blood glucose may be falling from the previous meal.
