MERIDIA THERAPY

Obesity is medically defined as being 20% above your healthy body weight. It is a dangerous condition and one of the leading contributors to morbidity nationwide. Many health concerns are directly attributed to obesity. Those extra pounds raise your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and even some forms of cancer.

There is no magic solution to taking off weight and keeping it off. Controlled studies demonstrate that a combination of reduced calories, increased exercise, and sometimes pharmacological interventions facilitate weight reduction.

The medication Meridia (sibutramine hydrochloride monhydrate) has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration and shows some promising statistics as an adjunct to weight reduction. Meridia affects the appetite control center in the brain. Common side effects include dry mouth, headache, increased sweating, increased blood pressure, and heart rate. In some individuals severe effects may occur such as pulmonary hypertension, shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, and swelling of feet and legs. These side effects are rare, but if they do occur discontinue the medication immediately and call your health care provider. Also important for you to know is that other prescription medication and over the counter drugs may cause serious interactions. These include Zoloft, Paxil, Serzone, Wellbutrin, and dextromethorphan (found in cough medicines). Please make sure you give your health care providers a full list of the medications that you are taking.

Before beginning this program you will be required to have an EKG, blood pressure, and weight and height evaluation. You will also be required to keep monthly visits to the office. We will also make recommendations for dietary changes and ways for you to safely increase your physical activities (such as exercise programs, health clubs, or personal trainers).

Remember losing weight and keeping it off is a combination of hard work, determination, and a positive attitude!
